Iakob Ofiri

Jacob Ofir  (Efremashvili) was born on June 11, 1945 in Sukhumi. He spent the early years of his life in the Jewish community of Sukhumi. He graduated from high school in 1963.

From 1963 to 1968, he studied at the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Georgia.

In 1972, he immigrated to Israel with his family, however, after several years of living in Israel, he returned to Georgia and in 1998 defended his thesis at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, where he was awarded the degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences.

Since 2002, he has been the general director of the World Jewish Congress of Georgia. His activities include academic-scientific and diplomatic fields. He is a doctor of history, researcher, scientist, and diplomat. He speaks several languages: Hebrew, Georgian, English, and Russian.

Jacob Ofir is actively involved in strengthening the relationship between Israel and Georgia and resolving the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict.
